대규모 투자

나이트재단(John S. and James L. Knight)이 지역 뉴스 지원을 위한 American Journalism Project(AJP)에 2,500만 달러를 투자할 예정이다. 이는 AJP가 2019년 설립 이후 받은 최대 규모의 지원금이다.

투자의 의의

최근 많은 미국 자선 단체들이 지역 뉴스의 생존을 위해 나서고 있다.  AJP는 비영리 뉴스룸을 위한 자선 기금 모금을 전문으로 하며, 지역 뉴스 운동을 지원하기 위해 6,800만 달러 이상의 지역 자선 기금을 동원했다.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will invest $25 million in the American Journalism Project (AJP) to support local news. This is the largest grant AJP has received since its founding in 2019.
The significance of the investment
In recent years, many U.S. philanthropic organizations have stepped up to help local news survive.  AJP specializes in raising philanthropic funds for nonprofit newsrooms and has mobilized more than $68 million in local philanthropy to support the local news movement.

투자금 사용 계획

AJP는 현재 50개의 지역 뉴스룸을 지원하고 있으며, 향후 3년 동안 60개로 확대할 예정이다.

특히, Knight Resiliency Lab이라는 새로운 부서를 만들어 지역 뉴스 조직에 필수적인 전문 지식과 지원을 제공할 계획이다.

비영리 뉴스의 성장

더 많은 미국 지역 뉴스룸이 영리에서 지역 후원 등을 전제로 한 비영리 사업 모델로 전환하고 있다.

현재 Institute for Nonprofit News 회원의 약 48%가 지역 뉴스 조직으로, 2017년 약 20%에서 크게 증가했다.

How we plan to spend the money

AJP currently supports 50 local newsrooms and plans to expand to 60 over the next three years.
In particular, we will create a new division, the Knight Resiliency Lab, to provide essential expertise and support to local news organizations.

The growth of nonprofit news

More local newsrooms are transitioning from for-profit to nonprofit business models.
Today, about 48 percent of the Institute for Nonprofit News' members are local news organizations, up from about 20 percent in 2017.
