NBC유니버설, 또다시 감원 단행…비교적 ‘언스크립티드’ 부문 타격 커

NBC유니버설(NBCUniversal)이 2025년 4월 30일(현지시간) 또 한 차례 구조조정을 진행하며, 이 과정에서 언스크립티드(비드라마, Unscripted) 부문이 가장 큰 타격을 입었다고 현지 매체 데드라인(Deadline)이 단독 보도했다.

언스크립티드 조직 개편…SVP급 임원 해고 포함

이번 감원 조치로 인해 스테파니 스틸(Stephanie Steele) 언스크립티드 커런트 제작 담당 SVP와 제니 라미레스(Jenny Ramirez) 언스크립티드 포맷 담당 SVP 등이 회사를 떠나게 됐다.

또, NBC·피콕(Peacock)·브라보(Bravo) 등에서 언스크립티드 프로그램을 담당하던 디렉터급과 매니저급 인력 일부도 함께 해고된 것으로 알려졌다.

스테파니 스틸: NBC유니버설에서 15년 가까이 재직하며 ‘Casey Anthony: Where The Truth Lies’, ‘Face to Face with Scott Peterson’, ‘Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy’ 등 트루크라임 시리즈를 담당해온 핵심 인물이었다.

제니 라미레스: 2022년 말 NBC유니버설에 합류하기 전, TBS·TNT·TruTV 언스크립티드 부문 SVP로 재직하며 ‘Wipeout’, ‘Rat in the Kitchen’, ‘Stupid Pet Tricks’ 등을 선보인 베테랑 임원이다.

이 밖에도 크리스티 디스(Christy Dees) 브라보(Bravo) 개발 담당 부사장(VP)이 회사를 떠났다. 디스는 15년 넘게 NBC유니버설에 몸담으며 ‘Summer House’, ‘The Real Housewives’, ‘Below Deck’ 등 간판 예능 프랜차이즈에 기여해 왔다.

NBCUniversal has initiated another significant round of layoffs, with its unscripted (non-scripted/reality) divisions bearing the brunt of the cuts.

According to Deadline, this restructuring led to the departure of several key senior executives, including Stephanie Steele (SVP of Unscripted Current Production), Jenny Ramirez (SVP of Unscripted Formats), and Christy Dees (VP of Development at Bravo), all of whom had long-standing tenures and played major roles in developing and overseeing hit reality franchises such as “The Real Housewives,” “Below Deck,” and various true-crime series1.

The layoffs also affected directors and managers across NBC, Peacock, and Bravo, indicating a broad impact within the company’s reality TV operations. These changes coincide with a larger organizational overhaul following the exit of Corie Henson, the former EVP of Unscripted Content, Competition, and Game Shows. Leadership responsibilities have since shifted: Pearlena Igbokwe, head of Universal Studio Group, now oversees all of NBC Entertainment (both scripted and unscripted), while Frances Berwick has moved into a newly defined role as Chairman of Unscripted Content for non-NBC platforms like Peacock and Bravo. Rachel Smith and Sharon Vuong are now key executives managing unscripted programming under this new structure1.

NBCUniversal’s unscripted lineup remains robust, featuring major shows like “America’s Got Talent,” “The Voice,” “American Ninja Warrior,” and “Deal or No Deal Island” on NBC, as well as “Love Island USA,” “The Traitors,” and spinoffs of “The Real Housewives” and “Below Deck” on Peacock.

The timing of these layoffs is closely linked to NBCUniversal’s ongoing corporate restructuring and the planned spin-off of its cable assets into a new publicly traded entity, provisionally called SpinCo. While the unscripted division was most affected, there were also cuts in scripted departments, notably with the exit of Vivian Lin, VP of Development at Universal Content Productions (UCP)

언스크립티드 부문 외에도 일부 스크립티드 조직에서 인력 감축이 있었다. 대표적으로 유니버설 콘텐츠 프로덕션(UCP)에서 개발 담당 부사장(VP)으로 근무하던  비비안 린(Vivian Lin)이 회사를 떠났다. 그는 넷플릭스에서 7년 간 인디 영화를 담당한 후 2년 전 UCP에 합류했었다.

향후 전망

이번 감원은 NBC유니버설이 추진하고 있는 대규모 조직 개편과 케이블TV 사업부 SpinCo(가칭)’ 분사 작업과 맞물려 진행된 것으로 보인다. 특히, 언스크립티드 부문(비드라마 부문)에서의 대규모 해고는 장르 자체의 성장 정체 또는 방향성 재정비를 의미할 수도 있어 업계의 주목을 받고 있다.
