애플은 2025년 2월 24일 미국 전역에서 사업 확장과 시설 건설 계획과 함께, 향후 4년 동안 미국에 5,000억 달러 이상을 투자하고 2만 명을 고용하겠다는 계획을 발표했다.

새롭게 생기는 일자리는 연구개발(R&D), 실리콘 엔지니어링, 소프트웨어 개발, 인공지능(AI) 및 머신 러닝 분야에 집중될 예정이다.
애플은 미국 내 칩과 서버 제조를 대폭 확대하고, 전국의 학생들과 노동자를 대상으로 한 기술 개발 프로그램도 추진할 계획이다.

애플이 “역대 최대 투자 약속”이라고 부르는 이번 발표는, 제조업을 미국으로 되돌리겠다는 트럼프 대통령의 구상과 정확히 맞아떨어지는 성과로 볼 수 있기 때문이다.

트럼프 대통령은 지난 목요일 오벌 오피스(대통령 집무실)에서 팀 쿡 애플 CEO를 만났다. 이후 트럼프 대통령은 흥분을 감추지 못하고, 주지사들과 만나는 자리에서 카메라가 돌아가는 가운데 이 계획을 너무 일찍 공개해 버렸다. 그는 “팀 쿡이 수천억 달러를 투자한다고 했다. 그가 발표했길 바라는데... 아마 내가 먼저 발표해 버린 걸 수도 있지. 그렇지만 뭐 어때? 난 진실만 말한다. 그가 그렇게 말했다면 이제 실제로 해야 할 거 아닌가?”라고 발언했다.

애플은 직접 고용과 공급업체 및 제조사와의 협력, 그리고 iOS 앱 생태계에서의 개발자 일자리를 통해, 현재 미국 전역에서 약 300만 개의 일자리를 지원하고 있다고 밝혔다.

애플은 이미 50개 주 전역에서 수천 곳의 공급업체와 협업하고 있으며, 이 중 12개 주에 위치한 24곳의 공장에서 생산 활동을 벌이고 있다.

사실 애플은 4년 전에도 이와 유사한 발표를 했다. 2021년 애플은 향후 5년간 미국 전역에 4,300억 달러를 투자하고, 2만 개의 신규 일자리를 창출하겠다고 약속했다. 여기에는 노스캐롤라이나주 리서치 트라이앵글 파크에 건립되는 신규 캠퍼스도 포함되는데, 이 프로젝트는 지난해 개발이 잠정 중단된 바 있다.

Apple has unveiled an ambitious expansion plan for the United States, pledging to invest over $500 billion and create 20,000 new jobs in the next four years. This initiative, described as Apple's "largest-ever spend commitment," will focus on advancing various technological fields, including research and development, silicon engineering, software development, and artificial intelligence.

The company aims to significantly expand its chip and server manufacturing capabilities within the U.S., while also promoting skills development for students and workers nationwide. This move aligns with President Trump's agenda to boost domestic manufacturing, and comes shortly after a meeting between Trump and Apple CEO Tim Cook in the Oval Office.

Apple's expansion will span across the country, building upon its existing network of suppliers and manufacturers in all 50 states, which includes 24 factories across 12 states. The tech giant claims it currently supports nearly 3 million jobs in the U.S. through direct employment, supplier and manufacturer relationships, and the iOS app economy.

However, it's worth noting that Apple made a similar announcement in 2021, committing $430 billion in U.S. investments and 20,000 new jobs over five years. This previous plan included a new campus in North Carolina's Research Triangle Park, though development was subsequently paused.

This latest announcement represents a significant increase in Apple's investment commitment, potentially reflecting the company's continued growth and its response to evolving economic and political landscapes.
