Social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, is piloting a new program to highlight posts where users who typically disagree actually find common ground, Axios reported exclusively on Friday.

X plans to expand its Community Notes feature, previously used only for potentially misleading content, to add context to regular posts that resonate across different viewpoints. The pilot program will begin with a small group of randomly selected Community Notes contributors in the United States, who will receive prompts to add explanations without direct notification of their selection.

Starting Small, Planning Gradual Expansion

The pilot program will initially target a small number of Community Notes users in the U.S. Keith Coleman, X's VP of product, explained that "selected participants won't receive direct notification but will see prompts in their main feed to add context to everyday posts."

Participants will evaluate whether posts help unify polarizing opinions or if they're entertaining. This feedback will be used to develop an open-source algorithm that identifies posts liked by people with different perspectives.

Currently, Community Notes only appear on content flagged as potentially misleading, and notes are displayed in feeds only when users who typically disagree find them helpful. The new program's key innovation is expanding this feature to regular posts.

Meta Adopts Community Notes as Industry Standard Emerges

X's Community Notes feature is already spreading across the industry. Meta eliminated fact-checkers in the U.S. in January, arguing they were "too politically biased," and soon after began testing Community Notes as a replacement using X's open-source technology.

Coleman, who joined Twitter in 2016 and helped build the original Community Notes program, emphasized the importance of gradual expansion, noting that "when we first piloted Birdwatch (now Community Notes) in 2021, we had just 1,000 participants."

Today, Community Notes has grown to include over 1 million contributors across 200 countries and has proven effective in reducing the spread of misinformation by nearly 60%. X has open-sourced its algorithm and data to increase transparency and ensure diverse perspectives participate in evaluations.

"Significant Agreement Even on Controversial Issues"

"Contrary to public perception, X's data shows there's actually quite a lot of agreement, even on controversial issues," Coleman stated. He believes the program has "potential to build momentum around widely shared opinions, which could reshape social discourse and how we think about governing," adding that "it has potential to change the world."

X plans to expand the feature to all users once sufficient data is collected, allowing everyone to add notes and see posts with additional context. As social media polarization becomes an increasingly serious societal issue, industry observers are watching closely to see what impact X's initiative might have on online discourse culture.
