Nexstar, America's largest local broadcaster, has agreed to acquire fourth-ranked Tegna for $6.2 billion (approximately 8.9 trillion won), creating the largest local broadcasting empire in U.S. history. The deal will see Nexstar operating 265 TV stations across 44 states and Washington D.C., wielding influence over nearly half of all U.S. television households. This 'mega-deal,' made possible by the Trump administration's deregulation push, would have been impossible under the Biden era and signals a seismic shift in the American local broadcasting landscape.

미국 방송 판도를 뒤흔든 '세기의 빅딜'

8월 20일 발표된 이번 인수합병은 미국 미디어 업계에 충격파를 던졌다. 텍사스 어빙에 본사를 둔 넥스타(Nexstar)는 이미 201개 방송국을 통해 미국 TV 가구의 39%에 도달하는 업계 1위 기업이었다. 여기에 테그나(Tegna)의 64개 방송국까지 더해지면, 사실상 미국 전역의 지역 방송을 좌지우지할 수 있는 압도적 영향력을 갖게 된다.

The 'Deal of the Century' Reshaping U.S. Broadcasting

The merger announcement on Tuesday, August 20, sent shockwaves through the American media industry. Irving, Texas-based Nexstar was already the industry leader, reaching 39% of U.S. TV households through 201 stations. Adding Tegna's 64 stations will give it overwhelming influence over local broadcasting nationwide.

Most notably, the combined entity will cover 132 of America's 210 designated TV markets. This means Nexstar's broadcasts will be virtually inescapable anywhere in the United States. In approximately 35 markets where the two companies overlap, their market dominance will approach monopolistic levels.
