지난 7일 미국 텍사스주 오스틴(Texas Austin) 컨벤션센터에서 세계 최대 종합 콘텐츠 축제 'SXSW 2025'가 개막되었다. SXSW(South by Southwest)는 음악과 드라마, 영화 콘텐츠는 물론 소셜미디어와 XR(확장현실) 등 엔터테인먼트 테크(Technology) 분야를 아우르는 전 세계 유일한 행사이다. 참가자의 한 사람으로서 15일 폐막을 앞두고 있는 'SXSW 2025'를 개괄적으로 소개하고, 평가해 보고자 한다.

On March 7, the world’s largest comprehensive content festival, “SXSW 2025,” opened at the Austin Convention Center in Texas. Known as South by Southwest, SXSW is the only global event that spans music, drama, film content, social media, and XR (extended reality), among other entertainment technologies. As one of the attendees, and with the festival concluding on the 15th, I would like to provide an overview and evaluation of SXSW 2025.

SXSW의 시작은 지역의 작은 음악축제
SXSW는 1987년 미국 텍사스 오스틴의 음악 관계자들이 지역 음악 산업을 활성화하기 위한 축제로 시작하였다. 오스틴은 텍사스 주내에서도 진보적인 성향을 가진 도시로, 다양성과 포용성을 바탕으로 음악을 비롯 다양한 문화와 예술이 번창했던 도시이다. 이러한 문화적 배경 외에 오스틴 소재 텍사스대학교(UT, University of Texas)가 주도하는 젊고 역동적인 분위기와 어우러지면서 행사가 활력을 띠게 되었다. 특히 행사 기간 동안 6번가(Old & New 6th Street)를 중심으로 시 전체가 행사장으로 탈바꿈하는 등 오스틴 시정부와 단체, 시민들의 적극적인 지원과 참여가 SXSW의 성공에 크게 기여하였다.

Humble Beginnings as a Local Music Festival
SXSW originated in 1987 as a local music festival organized by industry professionals in Austin, Texas, aiming to revitalize the city’s music scene. Even within the state of Texas, Austin stands out for its progressive culture, where diversity and inclusion fostered a vibrant environment for music, as well as various forms of art and culture. In addition to this cultural backdrop, the youthful, dynamic atmosphere led by the University of Texas (UT) in Austin helped the festival gain momentum. During the event, the entire city comes alive—most notably along Old & New 6th Street—thanks to strong support and participation from the Austin city government, local organizations, and residents. This collective effort played a major role in SXSW’s success.

전 세계가 참여하는 '글로벌 콘텐츠 종합 축제'로 발전
음악 페스티벌 중심 지역행사로 시작하여 1990년대 영화 및 인터랙티브 미디어 분야가 추가되었고, 2000년대에는 소셜 미디어가 SXSW에서 최초로 소개되었으며, 최근에는 인공지능(AI), 확장현실(XR) 등 미래 기술 트렌드를 논의하고 산업 관계자들(투자자 포함)이 교류하는 등 세계적인 종합 콘텐츠 페스티벌로 자리를 잡았다.
SXSW가 매년 새로운 분야를 추가하고, 컨퍼런스를 비롯하여 프로그램을 다양화하면서 끊임없이 진화해왔듯이 앞으로도 SXSW의 혁신은 계속될 것으로 기대가 된다.

Evolving into a ‘Global Comprehensive Content Festival’
Starting out as a music-focused local event, SXSW expanded in the 1990s to include film and interactive media. In the 2000s, it introduced social media to the world, and in more recent years, it has become a global comprehensive content festival where people discuss cutting-edge technologies like AI and XR (extended reality), with industry stakeholders (including investors) gathering to collaborate.
As SXSW continually adds new fields each year and diversifies its programming—such as conferences—its capacity for innovation seems poised to keep growing well into the future.

콘텐츠와 테크놀로지의 결합으로 콘텐츠 영역 무한 확장
'SXSW 2025'에서 VR, AR, MR 관련 기술(서비스)과 기업을 위주로 구성된 'XR Experience'가 언론과 참관객들로부터 높은 관심과 인기를 끌었다. 정식 개장일에는 행사장 안에 발 디딜 틈이 없을 정도로 관람객들이 몰렸다. 일반 참가기업의 관계자들도 콘텐츠 산업 트렌드 파악을 위해 반드시 방문해야 할 전시장으로 생각할 정도였다.
콘텐츠와 IT가 결합하면서 보다 높은 몰입감 제공, 상호작용 콘텐츠로 이용자의 사용의사와 빈도 증대, 가입 서비스 및 개인화된 맞춤형 서비스로 수익모델 확장 등 발전가능성은 무궁무진해 보였다.
또한 미디어 아트(media Art) 분야의 경우 예술과 IT를 접목시킨 수준 높은 작품들을 선보였다. 미디어 아트는 예술가의 창의적인 아이디어를 현실로 구현해 줄 뿐만 아니라, 관객들에게 새로운 경험을 제공하는 데 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다는 것을 한번 더 확인하였다. 미디어아트 분야 기존 콘텐츠 및 IT기업은 물론, 청년들이 설립한 스타트업의 아이디어와 실험적 시도가 인상적이었으며, 향후 발전가능성을 확인시켜 주었다.

Infinite Content Expansion Through the Convergence of Content and Technology
At “SXSW 2025,” the ‘XR Experience,’ featuring VR, AR, and MR technologies and companies, drew significant attention from media outlets and attendees alike. On its official opening day, the venue was so crowded that it was difficult to move around. Even participants from general exhibiting companies felt it was a must-visit area for anyone wanting to keep up with the latest trends in the content industry.
Thanks to the fusion of content and IT, the possibilities appear limitless: enhanced immersion, interactive content that increases user engagement and frequency of use, and new revenue streams from subscription-based or highly personalized services.
In the field of media art, SXSW showcased sophisticated works that merge art and technology. Beyond simply materializing an artist’s creative vision, media art can provide audiences with novel, immersive experiences. It was particularly striking to see not only established content and IT companies but also startups founded by young entrepreneurs experimenting with innovative ideas—underscoring the potential for continued growth in this space.

브라질과 대만, 'SXSW 2025'의 또 다른 주인공
SXSW 2025에서 주최국 미국을 제외하면 브라질과 대만의 활약이 돋보였다. 평소 관심을 크게 두지 않아서 그럴 수 있지만, 가장 의외의 국가는 브라질이었다. 브라질은 XR분야에서 가장 많은 기업 관계자들과 전문가들이 'XR Experience'에 참가하여 시종일관 분위기를 주도하였다. 대만콘텐츠진흥원(TAICCA)이 'XR Experience'의 메인 스폰서로 이름을 올린 것도 예상하지 못했던 일이었다.
SXSW 현장에서 만난 행사 관계자들은 SXSW 흥행에 있어 이들 국가의 기여와 활동이 큰 힘이 되었다고 인정하였다. 글로벌 콘텐츠 시장 내에서 역할을 강화하면서 드라마 등 전통적인 영상 콘텐츠 분야 외에 엔터테크 분야에서 경쟁력을 확보하기 위한 브라질과 대만의 '국가 전략'일 수 있다고 생각하였다. 앞으로 브라질과 대만의 콘텐츠 시장 내 행보는 예의주시할 필요가 있다.

Brazil and Taiwan: Other Headliners at ‘SXSW 2025’
Apart from the host nation, the United States, Brazil and Taiwan made particularly strong showings at SXSW 2025. While perhaps unexpected, Brazil stood out the most: it had the largest number of company representatives and experts participating in the ‘XR Experience,’ setting the tone throughout. It was also surprising to see the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) listed as the main sponsor of the ‘XR Experience.’
Organizers at SXSW acknowledged the substantial role that these two countries played in the event’s success. As Brazil and Taiwan strengthen their positions in the global content market, it appears they are pursuing a national strategy to build competitiveness in entertainment technology, in addition to traditional video content like drama. Their future moves in the content sector are certainly worth watching closely.

다양성과 포용성, 미래 지향성과 사회적 책임성 지향하는 SXSW
SXSW는 음악, 영화, 인터랙티브 미디어를 아우르는 세계적인 축제로 다양성과 포용성, 미래 지향성과 사회적 책임성 등의 가치를 중요하게 생각하고, 행사의 구성 및 운영 곳곳에 잘 반영하고 있다. 우선 SXSW는 성별, 인종, 성적 지향, 국적 등에 관계없이 모든 사람들이 참여하고 자신의 목소리를 낼 수 있는 '글로벌 문화 플랫폼'의 역할을 충실하게 하고 있다.
행사장에서는 다양한 문화적 배경을 가진 아티스트들의 작품을 선보이고, 디즈니 같은 글로벌 콘텐츠 기업뿐만 아니라 창업 1년 된 스타트 기업도 자신들의 아이디어를 가지고 당당하게 참여하고 있다. SXSW의 중심인 컨퍼런스에서는 다양한 주제를, 다양한 관점을 가진 패널 토론을 통해 사회적 이슈에 대한 논의를 촉진하고 있다.
SXSW의 중요한 역할 중 하나는 문화와 사회, 그리고 기술의 미래를 탐구하는 일이다. 콘텐츠와 문화의 트렌드를 선도할 뿐만 아니라, 인공지능, 가상현실, 블록체인, 지속가능한 기술 등 미래를 이끌어 갈 혁신적인 아이디어와 기술을 발굴하고 소개하는 데 상당한 비중을 두고 있다.
미래학자 에이미 앱(Amy Webb), 디즈니 경영진의 강연 등 'SXSW 2025' 컨퍼런스 주요 세션의 연사들은 미래를 전망하면서 동시에 기업과 기술의 사회적 책임을 강조한다. 대부분의 세션 현장에 수어통역인을 배치하는 것에서 SXSW가 지향하는 가치를 느낄 수 있었다.

Covering music, film, and interactive media, SXSW is a global festival that deeply values diversity, inclusion, forward-thinking perspectives, and social responsibility—principles that permeate the festival’s organization and operations. First and foremost, SXSW functions as a “global cultural platform” where anyone, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, or nationality, can participate and share their voice.
The festival venues showcase works by artists from various cultural backgrounds, and alongside global media giants like Disney, startups barely a year old confidently present their own ideas. Centered around conferences, SXSW spurs discussions on social issues through panel debates featuring a wide array of viewpoints.
One of SXSW’s key roles is exploring the future of culture, society, and technology. Beyond shaping trends in content and culture, SXSW devotes considerable energy to discovering and highlighting groundbreaking ideas and technologies—such as AI, VR, blockchain, and sustainable innovations—that could define the future.
Speakers at major conference sessions of “SXSW 2025,” including futurist Amy Webb and Disney executives, looked ahead to the future while underscoring the social responsibility of corporations and technologies. The presence of sign language interpreters at most sessions also exemplifies SXSW’s commitment to these values.

한국 콘텐츠 산업에 주는 함의, 콘텐츠와 기술의 결합이 만들 새로운 미래
한국콘텐츠진흥원(KOCCA) 주관으로 12개 한국 콘텐츠기업들이 'SXSW 2025'에 참가하여 기술과 서비스, 사업 전략 등을 참가자들에게 소개하였다. 또한 특별 패널 세션 “Sustaining Fandom: Why K-Entertainment is Here to Stay”를 통해서 K-팝, 드라마, 웹툰 등 한국 콘텐츠의 폭발적인 인기를 어떤 방식으로 유지·확장해 나갈 수 있는가를 심도있게 논의하고, 참가자들과 공유하였다.
이번 'SXSW 2025'에 참가한 한국 콘텐츠 및 테크 기업들은 AI, XR, 메타버스 등 첨단 기술을 활용한 혁신적인 콘텐츠를 세계에 선보였다. 대부분의 참가 기업들이 콘텐츠 스타트업 혹은 중소기업이었지만, 자신의 분야에서 혁신적인 기술과 서비스를 자체 개발, 보유하고 있다는 점은 눈여겨볼만한 부분이었다.
'SXSW 2025'에서 한국 콘텐츠 기업들의 활약은 단순한 기술력의 과시를 넘어서 앞으로 콘텐츠와 기술의 결합 혹은 융합이 만들어낼 새로운 가능성을 세계 무대에서 보여주었다는 의미가 크다. 이를 통해서 한국이 '인공지능 시대'에도 첨단 콘텐츠 분야에서 선도적 위치를 확보하고, 글로벌 디지털 콘텐츠 시장에서 영향력을 더욱 확대해 나갈 수 있기를 기대한다.

Implications for Korea’s Content Industry: A New Future Born of Content-Technology Convergence
Under the auspices of the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), twelve Korean content companies participated in SXSW 2025, introducing their technologies, services, and business strategies to attendees. A special panel session, “Sustaining Fandom: Why K-Entertainment is Here to Stay,” offered an in-depth discussion on how to maintain and expand the explosive popularity of K-pop, K-dramas, and webtoons, and the insights were shared with festival participants.
At this year’s SXSW, Korean content and tech companies showcased innovative products that harness advanced technologies such as AI, XR, and the metaverse. Most were startups or small to medium-sized enterprises, yet they stood out for developing and possessing proprietary, groundbreaking technologies within their respective fields.
The performance of Korean content companies at SXSW 2025 goes beyond merely flaunting technological prowess. It illustrates the new possibilities created by the fusion or convergence of content and technology on a global stage. Through these efforts, Korea is positioning itself to secure a leading role in advanced content even in the “age of artificial intelligence,” and to further expand its influence in the global digital content market.
