The divestment by WBD's second-largest shareholder comes immediately after the company announced plans to split its cable channel business from its HBO Max streaming service, signaling a profound lack of confidence in WBD's future prospects.

The Newhouse family's WBD stake sale symbolically represents the current state of Warner Bros, once a Hollywood icon. As major shareholders in the Conde Nast magazine empire, newspaper companies, cable giant Charter, and social media platform Reddit, the Newhouse family brings decades of media industry investment expertise to their decisions.

Following the sale, the Newhouse family's WBD ownership has been reduced to 4%. While the family cited "estate planning and investment program" as reasons for the divestment, this essentially means they declined to provide specific justification for their exit.

Three Years of Stagnation

WBD's stock price has remained in the doldrums for three years since the company's formation through the merger of WarnerMedia (formerly Time Warner) and Discovery.
