생성 AI 기술이 급격히 확산되면서 예술·음악·문학 등 다양한 분야 창작자들의 저작권 문제가 새로운 화두로 떠오르고 있다. 최근 공개된 설문 결과에 따르면, 미국 성인 대다수가 창작자의 동의권과 보상권 등을 강화하는 제도적 장치를 마련해야 한다고 인식하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

미국 시장조사기관 HarrisX가 버라이어티 의뢰로 실시한 여론조사(2024년 5월 2~13일, 미국 성인 18세 이상 1,001명 대상)에 따르면, AI 모델 학습 목적으로 창작자의 작업물이 활용될 경우 충분한 사전 동의와 보상이 이루어져야 한다는 의견이 우세한 것으로 확인됐다.

우선 “창작자의 작품을 AI 모델 학습 데이터로 사용하기 전에 반드시 허락을 받아야 한다”고 묻는 질문에,

응답자의 77%가 ‘동의한다’고 답했으며,

‘반대한다’ 11%,

‘잘 모르겠다’ 12%
로 나타났다.

이와 비슷하게, “특정 창작자의 스타일을 모방하기 위해 AI를 활용한다면 해당 창작자에게 보상을 지급해야 한다”는 주장에도

로, 응답자의 3명 중 2명 이상이 창작자 보상 제도의 필요성에 공감하고 있었다.

As gen AI technology advances at a rapid pace, questions surrounding copyright and intellectual property have taken center stage in the creative fields of art, music, and literature. A recent survey suggests that a strong majority of U.S. adults believe new policies should be introduced to protect creators’ rights—particularly regarding their consent, compensation, and the use of their work for AI training.

A recent public opinion poll, conducted by HarrisX on behalf of Variety Intelligence Platform (VIP) from May 2 to May 13, 2024, surveyed 1,001 U.S. adults (18+) on the issue of AI models being trained on creators’ works. The results indicate a prevalent belief that prior permission and compensation are crucial when using creators’ content for AI development purposes.

Specifically, when asked whether “artists/writers/musicians/creators should be asked and give consent before their work is used to train AI models,”

77% of respondents agreed,

11% disagreed, and

12% remained unsure.

Similarly, the question “artists/writers/musicians/creators should be compensated if AI is used to copy their style” yielded:

75% in agreement,

12% in disagreement, and

13% undecided.
