Major publishers, including The Atlantic, Politico, and Vox, are suing the Canadian AI startup Cohere for copyright and trademark infringement. They allege that Cohere used over 4,000 copyrighted works to train its large language model and displayed large portions or entire articles to users without directing traffic to publishers’ websites. In some instances, Cohere allegedly generated “hallucinated” articles, attributing them to publishers’ trademarks.
