빅테크, 자체 검열 피해자를 찾는 FTC

트럼프 정부 출범 이후 기업, 빅테크, 소셜 미디어, 미디어 기업 등 일반 국민의 생활과 커뮤니케이션에 큰 영향을 미치는 기업들에 대한 규제 강화에 본격 돌입했다. 민주당 집권 시절  이들 플랫폼과 미디어 기업들이 진보 진영에 편항돼 우파 여론을 검열하고 공화당에 불리한 방향으로 서비스나 정책을 시행했다는 우려가 배경이다.

트럼프 대통령의 가이드라인에 움직이고 있는 기관은 대표적인 기업과 미디어 규제 기관인  FTC(미국 연방 공정거래원회,Federal Trade Commission), FCC(미국 연방 방송통신위원회,The Federal Communications Commission) 등 두 곳이다. 이외 법무부 반독점국(The United States Department of Justice Antitrust Division)도 기업들의 독점 관련 규제나 반독점법안 위반을 검토한다.

미국 연방거래위원회(FTC)는 테크 플랫폼이 '발언 내용이나 소속(speech or affiliations)'에 따라 서비스 접근을 거부함으로써 사용자를 '검열'하는지에 대한 공개 조사를 시작했다고 2월 21일(현지시각) 밝혔다.

18일 트럼프 대통령은 헌법 상 독립 기관인 FTC, FCC, SEC(연방증권거래위원회)에 대한 대통령 규제 관한을 강화하는 내용의 행정명령도 서명했다.

FTC Seeks Victims of Big Tech, Self-Censorship


"Big Tech censorship," which he described as "un-American" and potentially illegal, is the latest in a series of attacks on tech companies.


Since the inauguration of the Trump administration, there has been a significant increase in regulation of corporations, big tech, social media, and media companies that have a major impact on the lives and communications of ordinary people.

This is due to concerns that these platforms and media companies sided with liberals during the Democratic administration, censoring right-wing speech and implementing services or policies that were unfavorable to Republicans.


Trump's guidelines are being implemented by two of the most prominent corporate and media regulators: the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division also reviews companies for violations of antitrust laws and regulations.


The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced on Feb. 21 that it has opened an open investigation into whether tech platforms are "censoring" users by denying them access to services based on "speech or affiliations.
