오큘러스(Oculus)와 방산업체 안두릴(Anduril) 창업자인 팔머 러키(Palmer Luckey)가 스타트업과 암호화폐 기업 전용 디지털 은행을 설립한다고 4일 발표했다. '에레보르(Erebor)'라는 이름의 이 은행은 20억 달러(약 2조 7,000억원) 가치로 평가받으며 최소 2억 2,500만 달러 투자 유치를 진행 중이다.

복수의 현지 소식통과 언론보도에 따르면, 팰런타이어(Palantir) 공동창업자 피터 틸(Peter Thiel)의 파운더스 펀드(Founders Fund)와 조 론스데일(Joe Lonsdale)이 이끄는 8VC가 주요 투자자로 나섰다. 자금 조달은 현재 진행 중이며 세부 조건은 변경될 수 있다고 전해졌다.

에레보르는 러키의 안두릴, 틸과 론스데일의 팰런타이어처럼 J.R.R. 톨킨의 소설 '반지의 제왕(Lord of the Rings)'에서 따온 이름이다. 작품 속 에레보르는 막대한 보물로 유명한 '외로운 산(Lonely Mountain)' 왕국을 가리킨다.

Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus and defense contractor Anduril Industries, announced on July 4th the establishment of a digital bank exclusively for startups and cryptocurrency companies. The bank, named "Erebor," is valued at $2 billion (approximately $2.7 trillion KRW) and is currently raising at least $225 million in investment.

According to multiple local sources and media reports, Founders Fund, led by Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel, and 8VC, led by Joe Lonsdale, have emerged as major investors. The fundraising is currently ongoing, and detailed terms may change, sources said.

Like Luckey's Anduril and Thiel and Lonsdale's Palantir, Erebor takes its name from J.R.R. Tolkien's novel "The Lord of the Rings." In the work, Erebor refers to the "Lonely Mountain" kingdom famous for its vast treasures.

에레보르는 2023년 3월 파산한 실리콘밸리 은행(Silicon Valley Bank)이 남긴 공백을 겨냥하고 있다. 실리콘밸리 은행은 파산 전까지 초기 스타트업과 벤처캐피털 업계의 주요 금융 파트너 역할을 했다. 기존 은행들이 위험하다고 여기는 고위험 기술 기업들에게 적극적으로 자금을 지원했던 것이다.

비즈니스인사이더가 확인한 서류에 따르면, 에레보르는 최근 미국 은행 면허를 신청했으며 스타트업과 암호화폐 기업을 대상으로 암호화폐 담보 대출 등의 서비스를 제공할 계획이다. 러키가 직접 설립한 에레보르는 제이콥 허시먼(Jacob Hirshman)과 오웬 라파포트(Owen Rapaport)가 공동 최고경영자(CEO)로 운영한다. 허시먼은 스테이블코인 발행업체 서클(Circle)에서 근무한 경력이 있으며, 라파포트는 현재 인수된 암호화폐 모니터링 업체 에어 컴플라이언스(Aer Compliance)를 공동창업했다.

마이크 하게돈(Mike Hagedorn) 전 밸리 내셔널 은행(Valley National Bank) 수석부사장 겸 최고재무책임자(CFO)가 에레보르 사장직을 맡을 예정이라고 그의 링크드인 프로필을 공개했다.

Erebor is targeting the gap left by Silicon Valley Bank, which collapsed in March 2023. Silicon Valley Bank served as a major financial partner for early-stage startups and the venture capital industry until its bankruptcy. It actively provided funding to high-risk technology companies that traditional banks considered too risky.

According to documents confirmed by Business Insider, Erebor recently applied for a U.S. banking license and plans to provide services such as cryptocurrency-collateralized lending to startups and cryptocurrency companies. Erebor, founded directly by Luckey, will be operated by co-CEOs Jacob Hirshman and Owen Rapaport. Hirshman has experience working at stablecoin issuer Circle, while Rapaport co-founded the now-acquired cryptocurrency monitoring company Aer Compliance.

Mike Hagedorn, former senior executive vice president and CFO of Valley National Bank, is expected to serve as Erebor's president, according to his LinkedIn profile.
